MURP Alumni Council
The MURP Alumni Council (MAC) is an advisory body created by MURP alumni and the UC Irvine Planning Policy and Design (PPD) Department’s Master's of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) program with the three-fold purpose of:
1) Providing support and advice to PPD for the MURP program;
2) Connecting MURP alumni to current MURP students; and
3) Creating a greater and stronger connection amongst all MURP alumni through communication, service opportunities, networking, training, and other relationship-building events.
MAC Mentorship Program
Since 2012, the MAC mentorship program has aimed to help UCI planning students learn about planning career options, and to build supportive professional relationships between students and UCI planning alumni. The UCI Planning Mentorship Program is now run by the MURP Alumni Council (MAC), Urban Planning Student Association (UPSA), and the Urban Studies Student Association (USSA).
Each school year, the program recruits alumni to serve as mentors for nearly the entire cohort of first-year MURPs. In 2015 we started offering three options to these students: remote one-on-one mentoring with alumni outside OC, local one-on-one mentoring, and small team mentoring.
Urban Studies majors are invited to join the small teams, which may also include a 2nd-year MURP or a recent UCI planning grad. The teams are designed so that participants at different stages can learn from each other while also learning from their lead mentor.
Our matching process is unusual in that it attempts to place students with mentors that they have selected themselves from the available alumni volunteers. A matching event near the beginning of the school year gives participants an opportunity to meet each other. The mentorship committee also uses information from intake forms to make the best possible matches.
Once the matches are made, it is up to the program participants to arrange their own meetings before the program wrap-up event in the spring.
To get involved or ask questions, contact MAC Mentorship Chair Mina Brown.
2016/2017 MAC Board Members
There are 9 members on the council, supported by additional volunteers. We greatly appreciate our committee members and other interested alumni who are regular contributors to MAC affairs!
The MAC members are chosen in open elections every two years. Any MURP alum may vote and nominate him/herself in the elections.
The 2017 MAC election process has begun - view the details here: http://bit.ly/MACelect17
Submit your self-nomination to be a candidate by May 12. Online voting will proceed May 16 - 24.
